The NAKC

The NAKC started in 1990 by a group of dog show lovers that had grown tired of the politics involved in the shows they had been attending. Realizing that the average person didn't have thousands of dollars to travel the country, hire handlers, or advertise in expensive magazines it became apparent that the need for something less expensive, political and based on family fun was the answer. Initially NAKC started for breeds considered "rare", in other words while they may be thousands of years old, the AKC or CKC did not yet recognize them for a variety of reasons. Around 1997 John Seibel took over the club with a vision in place. He had shown dogs himself to National Championships and was a active breeder of Neapolitan Mastiffs and Dogue de Bordeaux. Through his vision the NAKC grew from 4-5 shows a year to over 30 weekends including over 150 shows. With the decline in the economy the AKC and CKC decided to grab up as many breeds as possible to increase their entries and more importantly the money raised from litter registrations. Around 2004 NAKC moved to include all pure bred dogs in the conformation show ring under one umbrella. There have been growing pains, and not all areas are covered by our show schedule, but with support NAKC will grow to be one of the biggest conformation show clubs in North America. We offer International Championships and a variety of levels beyond. The average person can attain these with hard work, a good dog and little travel. We offer a Top Non Professional Handled Dog Award, to ensure that the Top Ten awards are not without a chance for those who prefer to handle their own dog. NAKC is not a registry, we are only involved in the conformation aspect of dog shows. It is important to note this as at present only the AKC or FCI pedigrees can be used to show around the World. While other conformation clubs either demand you register with them, or require fees to recieve Championship papers NAKC still keeps the costs as low as possible with format they are using. If you are interested in showing in a fun, family orientated show where no matter your economic situation you have a fair chance to win then please come out and experience the NAKC.
